Our mission is to improve the health and lives of mothers and babies by: improving birth outcomes; increasing exclusive breastfeeding rates; better identifying perinatal mood and anxiety disorders; increasing referrals for treatment of women with perinatal mood and anxiety disorders; providing new families with education and resources; maintaining a safe place where new families can gather for mutual support Informed and empowered parents raise healthy children who grow into secure adults committed to community-building. We honor the diversity of families in our community and recognize that individual circumstances will always shape what decisions a family needs to make.

I couldn't agree more, Caela! I am very comfortable with my mama friends from babs. We have a lot in common, including our thoughts on parenting. And when we don't completely agree, we still accept each others' ways. BABS is not just a place, it's a lifestyle :)
We are moving away in July and I will miss BABS greatly! I hope to go to La Leche League meetings where we move to make new friends.

I love this- and yes, it is a big reason we created BABS. But wherever you are, mamas, find your tribe! Fellow travelers are pretty darn important - makes the journey a whole lot sweeter.

This is great and I like that these tips are free. I can totally get overwhelmed with trying to be perfectly toxic-free (which, as you point out, isn't even possible) and this is a great reminder that I can take small yet meaningful steps. I'd read more of you posts for sure! If I may be so bold (haha, imagine me not being), here's an idea for future blog posts: Maybe you could focus on one thing a month we could try to implement -- like replacing one Teflon pan with a less toxic option, or purchasing and using a water filter. If I had one thing I could think about and try to do each month, I think I could establish some less-toxic habits. It's when I start thinking about the gazillion things that should be doing that I feel like I just need to go take a nap.

Love this! It can be so daunting to think of lifestyle changes for less toxicity, but with the banner of "free and easy" it's much easier to make the switch. Thanks Phaedra for your insight.

I would add that the nutrition of *both* parents even before conception is important to ensure a good start for the child is important.

Vitamins A and D are important, but so is vitamin K (K2, in particular). These 3 vitamins work synergistically to organize and deposit minerals into the bones and teeth. Magnesium is probably even more important than calcium, and often requires supplementation - magnesium is required to get calcium deposited into bony structures. Most Americans generally tend to be deficient in it.

Unhealthy first teeth can be a sign of food intolerances (leading to malnutrition), so it is always important to explore the underlying cause while treating the decay.
