Special Opportunity during Nurse & Chat

During Nurse & Chat on Wednesdays, September 14 from 10:00-12:30pm and October 12 from 10:00-1:00pm, Molly Mendota will be raising money for the BABS Volunteer Doula Program by gathering data from babies up to one year old using the “Brigance Inventory of Early Development”.

The new BABS Volunteer Doula Program will provide free birth doulas to women who might otherwise be unable to access this kind of support during their pregnancies, births, and postpartum periods. Single moms, teen moms, non-native English speakers, and women experiencing poverty, homelessness, domestic violence, addictions issues, or incarceration will qualify for this program.

As for the developmental testing, it’s called The “Brigance Inventory of Early Development” and it is a new edition of a dvelopmental assessment tool. The tests that we are administering are gathering data for standardizing the tool – in other words, we are NOT actually measuring kids’ progress; we are helping to develop the tool. The “test” takes about 20 minutes and involves the examiner observing the baby as well as asking the parents questions, and there is a short questionnaire for the parents to fill out as well. BABS gets $40 per baby tested. We can do babies up to one year old.
