Doulas have been shown to shorten the length of labor, reduce the need for unwanted interventions and pain medication, and increase mothers’ satisfaction with their birth experiences.
The BABS Student Birth Doula Program is a one-year training program for new birth doulas. This is a way for BABS to contribute to the pool of well-trained doulas in the community, while providing clients the option of hiring a Student Birth Doula. Fees paid by clients for the services of a Student Birth Doula cover the cost of running the program and help to sustain other programs, such as the Volunteer Doula Program and New Mothers Support Groups.

How the Student Birth Doula Program Works
If you are interested in hiring a Student Birth Doula, you may meet them one of two ways:
- Come to a Meet the Student Doulas event, held bi-monthly (see BABS Calendar or call (812) 337-8121 for schedule)
- Contact the Doula Supervisor at (812) 337-8121 or molly@bloomingtonbirth.org for a list of current student doulas.
You are responsible for interviewing and choosing a student doula. Once you have chosen a doula, you pay a fee (income-based fee schedule below) to BABS. When you hire a BABS Student Doula, you agree to complete an evaluation of her after your birth for BABS, as well as one for the doula’s certification, if applicable.
Throughout your relationship with your doula, she will have the mentorship of the Doula Supervisor. The Doula Supervisor may observe interviews and prenatal meetings. Your doula will update the Doula Supervisor each time she communicates with you, and the Doula Supervisor will be on call for phone support for your doula during your birth.
Cost of Hiring a Student Birth Doula
This scale follows the Income Categories that are used for other BABS classes and programs. These fees offset the cost of running the program; any profit goes towards the programs and services of BABS.
- Category A/B: $100
- Category C: $125
- Category D: $150
- Category E: $175
